ABOUT US

WSH at STM
The fight against poverty becomes explicit on Halloween night when over 800 volunteers meet at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School to collect donations for the local Neighbour 2 Neighbour (N2N) food bank. The vast majority of these volunteers are the school’s very own students, who successfully bring back tens of thousands of pounds of food each year. An initiative originally beginning with only 20 students over 15 years ago has grown to be one of the largest student-organized events in the country. The WSH collection area reaches from the Ancaster border in the west, to the escarpment in the north, Upper Wentworth to the east, and Twenty Rd to the south, accounting for approximately 22,000 homes. The entire collection process occurs in one night with the launch and return location being right in the school’s cafeteria. A single moment is not wasted as all donations are brought to the food bank within the next business day. This campaign’s success can also be credited to the many generous and dedicated sponsors and media outlets who help support the event. The community’s kindness translates in the successive growth of volunteers and donations every year.

The WE Movement
We Scare Hunger is affiliated with WE's We Scare Hunger campaign, formerly known as We, which is also based on the collection of non-perishable goods on Halloween night. In fact, WE has recognized St. Thomas More for conducting the largest WSH campaign in the world, raising over 80,000 lbs of food in each of the last few years. Tickets for We Day are awarded to students of the Executive committee each year for all their inspiring hard work. They are invited to experience the annual event initiating a year of global change. In 2013 STM students were given the opportunity to stand on the We Day Toronto stage and talk about the impact our school has made, in hopes of impacting the minds of 10,000 other young leaders in the audience. STM has also had the privilege and honour of having the Kielburger brothers visit and congratulate the school’s achievements in person. The example set by WE guides STM’S We Scare Hunger campaign to reach its greatest potential.

Neighbour 2 Neighbour
All donations collected from WSH go directly to the Hamilton West Mountain Neighbour to Neighbour Centre. There are approximately 1200 families each month who rely on N2N, 40% of which are women and children. This number accounts for approximately 4500 children alone in the area affected by poverty. Despite the donations exceeding 80,000 lbs, the majority of the food runs out by New Year’s. The presence of poverty in this community is evident in the constant need for food, supplies, and money for people who depend on N2N. St. Thomas More has been recognized for giving the biggest single day donation each year and being Platinum Sponsor for the food bank. This title does not limit STM students from reaching higher goals every year, as there is an ongoing need for charity in this community.

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING BEFORE SIGNING UP

Thank you for taking on the important responsibility of becoming STM Scares Hunger volunteers! This night is a long-standing tradition at STM, and we’ve grown to epic proportions; by becoming involved, you are becoming a part of our proud history! Your contribution to our cause in helping our many thousands of neighbours in need is crucial, and greatly appreciated! Below is the sign-up form. However, before you sign your group up, please collect the following information from all your group members (all are required fields, so you will not be able to complete the sign-up process without all of this information):
- First and last name (correct spelling please!)
- Contact information: cell number and email address
- Full Semester I school timetable information (Room #’s for each period only)

Please ensure that the first person listed on the sign-up form is the group representative who will be available to attend the mandatory meeting after school for the return of flyer packages and ensures that all maps are returned on Halloween night
Note: As a Group Representative you are responsible for attending the MANDATORY meeting after school on Thursday October 13th, 2016 in the CAF and must ensure that flyer packages are returned to us after flyers have been delivered and all maps are returned on Halloween night.

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING GROUP SIZE: Unless you have a very large vehicle (eg. a big pick-up truck), it is highly recommended to have no more than 4 group members, not including the driver (2-3 if the vehicle you will be using is small). This way there will be enough room in your vehicle for the hundreds of pounds of food you will be collecting, and won’t have to make unnecessary trips back and forth to the school before you finish your route(s).

DRIVERS -- You must find someone to drive for your group on Halloween night – any relative, friend, etc. who is legally licensed to drive in Ontario. If your driver is also a high school student (STM or otherwise) who needs Christian Service hours, indicate that on the form so they receive their hours as well. We will have a few extra drivers to spare for emergencies, but we cannot guarantee that one will be available for your group. To avoid complications and disappointment, please do what you can to find a driver of your own.
Again, please ensure all required fields are complete. Once you have signed up, continue to listen to our morning announcements for further instructions. As well, we strongly encourage you to follow us on social media for important updates throughout the campaign. Follow wsh_stm on Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat and post your thoughts and photos with #wsh2k19 and #cansovercandy.

Thanks again for your cooperation! Together, we are scaring hunger away from the Hamilton Mountain!
