Athlete of the Month - St. Thomas More
Ryan Doornick proves his athleticism, sportsmanship, leadership, and spirituality both within the school and greater community. Ryan has been on the senior boys’ basketball team for three consecutive years and the junior boys’ basketball team for two consecutive years which includes a city championship while on the junior team. With his outstanding play and calm demeanour he has earned the Most Valuable Player in Basketball in both his grade 9 and 10 years, the Junior Athlete of the Year in 2011, and numerous all-star and tournament MVP’s during his playing career at STM.
As the team captain for five years he has taken on the leadership role. He guides the team in warm-ups, encourages positive play, and dialogues with fellow team members during games and tournaments. Ryan provides a positive and comfortable atmosphere to all those on the team, and is a role model in particular to the younger athletes as he leads the team to work as a cohesive group.
Ryan has logged many hours of community service where he coaches basketball during various Catholic Youth Organization camps. He is an active role model to young students, athletes, and in particular to his younger siblings who also have a gift and passion for the sport.
Ryan is a well-rounded student. His commitment to his studies and school has proved beneficial. Ryan will leave St. Thomas More this year with respect from staff, coaches, and peers. He is receiving offers from various schools from both Canada and the United States. We congratulate Ryan with the HWCAA Athlete of the Month and wish him success in his future.
