Message to the Graduating Class of 2020

This is a message to the St. Thomas More Graduating Class of 2020. A group that will forever be remembered as the students that had the most challenging Grade 12 year of any on record! However, as I mentioned in my email to the student body last week, also a group that will be praised for their actions and leadership during this difficult time. It is the Class of 2020 that willingly sacrificed some of their best high school days so as to protect their health, and the health of others, and it is this class that will soon be leaving the comforts of STM and heading into a new world that will be very different than the one we lived in before Covid-19. I have every confidence that the skills and talents that you developed at STM will be put to great use as you become leaders in society and the agents of change necessary to transform the world. I will always be especially proud of this group of Knights.

As you know, Ontario remains in a State of Emergency, the order to close all schools has been extended, and large group gatherings remain banned. Therefore, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board made the very difficult decision to cancel June graduations (masses, ceremonies, and dinner-dances).

Please know that the STM staff has already begun investigating options for moving our June Graduation Ceremony to a time in the fall when, hopefully, things have normalized and gatherings are again permitted.

The $90 Graduation Fee will be held for you and applied towards the ceremony at that time. More information will be shared by the Grad Committee when it is available.

Grads of 2020, I know that this is not the way that you wanted to end your high school careers. However, I implore you to not allow any setbacks to slow you down and to always remember that tough times don’t last...tough people do! I leave you with the following quote from Pope Francis, “To you and to all, I repeat: never yield to discouragement, do not lose trust, do not allow your hope to be extinguished.”

The entire STM staff wish you and your family health and happiness during these challenging times.

God Bless

Mr. DiFrancesco
