Public consultation on service animals in schools

The Ontario Government is seeking your feedback into a draft policy on service animals in schools.

Bill 48, the Safe and Supportive Classrooms Act, 2019, amends the Education Act to provide the Minister of Education with the authority to establish policies and guidelines respecting service animals in schools.

The Ministry of Education is now consulting on a draft Policy/Program Memorandum (PPM), School Board Policies on Service Animals.

School boards, families, students, education partners, advocacy groups, community agencies and interested individuals across the province are invited to provide feedback on service animals in schools and classrooms.

The draft PPM is intended to provide direction to school boards when developing policies on service animals in schools. School boards would be required to comply with the policies and guidelines. The goal is to have a more fair, consistent and transparent process for families when making requests for service animals to accompany their children to school.

The draft PPM and online survey can be accessed at ... .

Public consultation for all stakeholders is open until May 4, 2019.
