On March 2, St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary’s cheer team traveled to the CAA Center in Brampton where it placed first in its division at the Ontario Challenge.
“MORE Cheer has been competing for three years now,” said Teacher Daniela Pearson, who coaches the team alongside Teacher Shawna Muir-Renzella. “We’ve done five competitions with our sixth coming up in April.” She noted that the team has always taken home first.
But building a gold-winning team requires dedication.
“We have 32 athletes this year. Our tryouts are the second day of school since we need to be ready for football season,” said Pearson.
“We always have a huge number of girls come to tryouts, around 80 to 90 students and the talent is incredible.”
Once the team has been solidified, the girls practice three times a week in addition to cheering at every Friday football game.
Outside school events, this year the team took part in Hamilton Health Science’s Staff Appreciation Day, visiting four hospitals in the city and sharing its high spirits.
“The girls are definitely learning life-long skills of commitment, dedication, hard work, leadership, collaboration and persistence,” said Pearson.
“Our girls always rise to the occasion and we’re so proud of them to say the least!”
These girls will be competing in Nationals on April 5 at the Scotiabank Center in Niagara Falls.
