Catholic Education: Living as Joyful Disciples
During the week of May 5-10, 2019, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board will celebrate the significant contribution that Catholic Education has made to the community, to the province, and to Canada.
The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week is “Living as Joyful Disciples.” The overall scriptural theme is taken from St. Peter’s Gospel (1 Peter 1:8), “Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy.”
Inspired by three sources, “Renewing the Promise,” “Gaudete et exsultate” and “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment,” the theme and sub-themes for this year’s Catholic Education Week are very much directed to the young people in our schools, especially in their growth in holiness and their formation as disciples of Christ through the discernment of their vocational pathways.
In the section of Renewing the Promise entitled, “A Community that Forms Joyful Disciples,” the Ontario Catholic Bishops write: “Our Catholic schools help to form joyful disciples as hearts and minds are opened to the transforming love of God and to the flame of faith in action. On a daily basis, Catholic schools demonstrate the joy of believing and witness the Good News to the communities that they serve.”
Pope Francis continually reminds us in word and in action, that in imitation of Jesus, we are called to service in our work in Catholic education.
The five sub-themes for Catholic Education Week 2019 are:
• Monday: Rooted in Prayer
• Tuesday: Living in Community
• Wednesday: Doing Justice and Creating Hope
• Thursday: Journeying Together in Faith
• Friday: Sharing the Good News
Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities at the school and system level, including prayer celebrations and service activities.
Parents, family and community members are invited to visit our schools during this special week and join in the many activities planned to celebrate Catholic Education Week 2019.
